Brief History of the Harbor House Site

The Land Trust is a private, non-profit membership corporation and community land trust. The Quissett Harbor House property is the locus for a simple summer community: a beach club on Buzzards Bay, a loaned home for the Quissett Yacht Club with parking, dock and dinghy dock, storage and gathering facilities. The buildings are sited on 6+ acres atop two coastal banks fronting on the Harbor and Bay, with a substantial wetland and coastal flood zone behind the buildings and surrounding the Beach Club part of the facilities. The property also consists of a narrow tidelands lot below the Harbor wall extending east toward the Town Dock and Boatyard. It is an Historic District for which the Harbor House is a "contributing" building. It provides access to the Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries, Inc. Knob property and is subject to an easement for that purpose.

Our Mission

Historically, the QHHLT has focused on encouraging and facilitating simple recreational activities at modest costs, while preserving the unique character and beauty of Quissett Harbor in general, and the LT property and buildings in particular. Today, our Mission remains consistent with the QHHLT Purpose as stated in the Articles of Incorporation [with tennis club omitted], which were crafted in keeping with the purchase agreement with H Carey in 1977. Our Mission as affirmed by the Board is: to operate a beach club and other outdoor recreational activities reasonably consistent with the preservation of the native vegetation and natural beauty of the land.

Our Vision

We are a welcoming community dedicated to social engagement, stewardship, and preservation of QHHLT. We are successful in maintaining the historic and natural character of the property, because of our careful planning, education and diligent preservation efforts. We are a good neighbor, a valued partner of QYC, and collaborator with local organizations that have strong interests in preservation.

Our Values

We appreciate the unique timelessness of Quissett, which has been made possible by members’ financial support and volunteerism. Consequently, we practice disciplined financial management and value our volunteers. We are passionate about sharing outdoor activities with fellow members, such as sunsets at the Beach Club. We are equally passionate about maintaining the historic buildings, and the natural environment for generations to come. We respect each other, the Land Trust property, and the communities where we live.
